The World Hasn’t Changed Size, but the Map Might: Why Africa Is Challenging a 450-Year-Old View of Earth

Africa is not getting bigger.

Europe is not shrinking.

Greenland has not suddenly lost millions of square kilometers.

Yet the familiar world map hanging in classrooms, appearing in textbooks and surviving across countless digital displays may be heading for one of its biggest challenges in centuries.

The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly backed an Africa-led initiative encouraging the use of world maps that represent the relative sizes of continents more accurately.

At the center of the debate is the Mercator projection, a map developed more than 450 years ago that became one of the most recognizable representations of Earth.

Its problem is not that it was badly designed.

It was designed for a different job.

Mercator created his projection for navigation, where preserving direction was enormously useful to sailors. But when the same projection is used to teach people what the world looks like, it produces a striking distortion: territories closer to the poles appear much larger than they really are, while equatorial regions appear comparatively smaller.

Africa has spent centuries on the losing side of that visual trade-off.

Now African countries are asking a surprisingly powerful question.

If we know the map distorts the world, why are we still treating it as normal?

The UN Backs “Correct the Map”

On September 4, the UN General Assembly approved the “Correct the Map” resolution by 164 votes to one.

Six countries abstained.

The United States cast the only vote against it.

The initiative was championed by Togo on behalf of the African Group, with the wider campaign receiving strong backing from the African Union.

Its objective is not to redraw national borders or alter territorial claims.

Nor does the resolution outlaw the Mercator projection.

Instead, it encourages governments, schools, international organisations, media institutions and technology companies to use map projections that represent the relative areas of countries and continents more faithfully when that is the purpose of the map.

That distinction matters.

The world is not receiving a new geography.

It is being encouraged to look at the existing geography differently.

Why Does Africa Look Smaller Than It Really Is?

The problem begins with something unavoidable.

Earth is approximately spherical.

A conventional map is flat.

Turning the surface of a globe into a rectangle is therefore similar to trying to flatten the peel of an orange without stretching, tearing or compressing any part of it.

It cannot be done perfectly.

Every flat world map has to sacrifice something.

Depending on the projection, that could mean distortions in shape, distance, direction or area.

The Mercator projection preserves local angles and directions particularly well.

That made it revolutionary for navigation when Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator introduced it in 1569.

But preserving those properties comes at the expense of area.

The farther a territory lies from the equator, the more exaggerated its apparent size becomes.

Greenland Shows How Dramatic the Illusion Can Be

One of the easiest ways to understand the problem is to compare Greenland and Africa.

On many Mercator maps, Greenland can appear surprisingly close to Africa in size.

In reality, there is no close comparison.

Africa covers roughly 30 million square kilometers and is about 14 times the size of Greenland.

South America provides another example.

Greenland can look larger than South America on a Mercator map even though South America is vastly bigger.

These distortions are not secret errors recently discovered by cartographers.

They are a known mathematical consequence of the projection.

The controversy is instead about why a map with such dramatic area distortion continues to influence popular perceptions of the world.

Africa Says Maps Influence More Than Geography Lessons

Supporters of the Correct the Map campaign argue that the consequences are psychological as well as geographical.

Maps teach people how to imagine the planet.

Long before someone memorizes population statistics, economic data or land areas, they develop a visual impression of which countries and continents are large and which are small.

That impression can become deeply embedded.

African campaigners argue that consistently presenting Africa as smaller than its true relative size reinforces an outdated perception of the continent’s place in the world.

For them, changing the map is therefore connected to a broader movement to challenge representations inherited from colonial periods.

The argument is not that Mercator deliberately designed his map to diminish Africa.

His projection predates much of Europe’s later colonization of the continent and was created principally to solve navigational problems.

The argument concerns what happened afterward: a specialized navigation projection became a globally familiar image of the world.

Enter the Equal Earth Map

One alternative promoted by the campaign is the Equal Earth projection.

Created in 2018 by cartographers Bojan Šavrič, Tom Patterson and Bernhard Jenny, Equal Earth is designed to preserve the relative area of countries and continents.

Africa therefore appears in proportion to Europe, Greenland, North America and the rest of the world.

The result can initially look strange to someone who has spent a lifetime looking at Mercator maps.

That reaction itself demonstrates how deeply familiar map shapes influence our mental image of Earth.

Equal Earth still does not produce a perfect representation.

No flat map can.

Shapes inevitably experience some distortion.

Its advantage is that when comparing the amount of Earth’s surface occupied by different countries and continents, their relative areas remain accurate.

India Would Look Different Too

The issue is not exclusively African.

Countries across South Asia, Southeast Asia, Latin America and other lower-latitude regions are also affected by the area distortions associated with Mercator.

India voted in favor of the UN resolution.

But New Delhi also emphasized an important cartographic principle: the appropriate projection depends on the purpose for which a map is being used.

That is scientifically significant.

There is no single projection that is automatically best for navigation, education, climate analysis, population mapping, measuring distance and every other possible application.

A projection should be selected according to what the map is trying to communicate.

The new debate is therefore less about declaring one map universally correct and another universally false.

It is about choosing the right map for the right job.

Why Did the United States Vote Against It?

The overwhelming vote made the American opposition particularly noticeable.

Washington was the only country to reject the resolution.

The US argued that the initiative was ideologically driven and represented a distraction from more urgent international challenges.

Other countries took a different position.

Ukraine, Serbia, Estonia, Lithuania, Georgia and Moldova abstained, according to ThePrint.

But with 164 countries supporting the measure, the broader international message was difficult to miss.

There is substantial support for reconsidering how global maps visually represent the relative size of the world’s regions.

The UN Resolution Does Not Make Mercator Disappear

Despite some dramatic headlines, Mercator is not about to vanish.

And there are good reasons it should not disappear entirely.

The projection remains useful for particular applications.

Its mathematical characteristics historically made it exceptionally valuable for maritime navigation because lines of constant compass bearing appear as straight lines.

The mistake is not using Mercator for purposes where those characteristics are helpful.

The criticism concerns using it as though it were a neutral representation of the relative physical size of countries.

The UN Secretariat itself does not prescribe one universal projection for all maps. Different UN maps use projections including Robinson, Winkel III and Eckert IV depending on context.

The new resolution therefore strengthens an existing principle rather than eliminating the science of map projection.

Digital Maps Have Already Changed the Debate

There is another reason this discussion looks different in 2026 than it would have decades ago.

We increasingly experience geography through screens rather than paper.

Modern digital mapping allows users to zoom from the entire planet to a single street.

Some services can display Earth as a three-dimensional globe, avoiding many of the compromises involved in representing the whole planet as one flat rectangle.

That means technology companies have more choices than traditional mapmakers did.

A classroom wall map must commit to one physical projection.

A digital platform can potentially switch representations according to scale and purpose.

That makes the continued dominance of any single flat projection less inevitable.

France Has Already Made a Move

The UN vote is also arriving alongside changes at the national level.

France announced that it would move away from Mercator for official world maps and use the equal-area Eckert IV projection instead.

The decision was presented as part of an effort to provide a more balanced representation of the planet.

Eckert IV is not Equal Earth, which again illustrates the larger point.

This movement does not necessarily demand that every institution use one identical map.

The broader objective is to reduce misleading area distortion when depicting the world as a whole.

Maps Have Always Contained Choices

The debate also reveals something we often forget about maps.

They look objective.

They contain coordinates, borders and coastlines. They appear mathematical and authoritative.

But every world map contains choices.

What goes in the center?

Where is the map cut?

Which direction appears at the top?

Which projection is used?

What property is preserved?

What gets distorted?

Those decisions may be based on mathematics and practical requirements, but their visual consequences influence how viewers understand the planet.

That does not mean maps are propaganda.

It means maps are representations rather than the Earth itself.

This Is Really a Fight Over the Mental Map of the World

That may be the most interesting way to understand the UN vote.

Africa’s physical geography has never been changed by the Mercator projection.

The continent has always occupied the same enormous area of Earth’s surface.

What has been distorted is the picture people carry in their heads.

For generations of students, a familiar rectangular map has quietly suggested that Greenland is enormous, Europe is larger than it really is relative to equatorial regions, and Africa occupies less of the planet than it actually does.

Correcting that impression is not as simple as choosing one new map and declaring the problem solved.

Equal Earth distorts some properties too.

So does Eckert IV.

So does Robinson.

Every attempt to flatten a globe requires compromise.

The more useful question is which compromise best serves the purpose of the map.

The Next Geography Lesson May Look Very Different

The UN resolution is non-binding, so governments, schools and technology companies are not being forced to throw away their existing maps.

Its importance is instead cultural and institutional.

An issue once largely confined to cartography classrooms has become an international political debate.

Africa has successfully persuaded most of the UN General Assembly that the way the world is visually represented deserves reconsideration.

And perhaps that is the most important result.

The campaign is not really asking anyone to make Africa bigger.

It is asking the world to stop making Africa look smaller.

After more than four centuries of looking at Earth through one of cartography’s most famous compromises, the familiar world map may finally have some serious competition.
